Greetings and Aloha Fam!
June is here, and summer is just days away! This is the season to gather together, fire up the grills, enjoy some outdoor activities, and create moments we'll never forget. Proverbs 17:22 reminds us, "A cheerful heart is good medicine," so let's seize every opportunity to build joy-filled memories together.
Summer always brings me back to my childhood. I remember those long Sunday drives to the countryside, stopping at roadside stands to pick up fresh watermelon, cantaloupe, and sweet corn. We’d spend evenings chasing and collecting lightning bugs and enjoying homemade vanilla ice cream (from a hand-cranked ice cream maker with lots of ice and rock salt) with Big Red Cream Soda. Life couldn’t get any better!!! During the hottest days, Mom would chill the watermelon and cut them in large slices, then give them to my sister and me to enjoy. (my my…what a treat!). Moments like these remind me of the power of simplicity, family, and togetherness. What about you? What are your fondest memories of summer? From potlucks to cookouts and beach days to family reunions, summer provides the perfect backdrop for strengthening our relationships while enjoying “real” community.
This month, we're also honoring dads! In the United States of America, Father’s Day is Sunday, June 15th. It’s a special day set aside not only to thank and appreciate fathers but also to reflect deeply on the incredible impact they've had (or are having) on our lives. To be honest, most dads seek to lead with strength when we need courage, wisdom when we seek guidance, and integrity when we need an example to follow. (How do you know this PJ? It’s simple…I’m a Dad too!) In many ways they shape us, protect us, and encourage us to become the very best versions of ourselves. Dads are not perfect…meaning, they don’t not always get it right, but they are still Dad. (Can I get an amen on this?!). So, in the next few days, let's take this opportunity to honor and express gratitude to all dads who faithfully demonstrate love, sacrifice, and dedication every day…we’ll almost every day! (Smile.)
I want to challenge each of you this summer. Here are four practical things you can do right now:
1. Host a Backyard BBQ (Potluck): Invite someone from church you don’t know very well to join your family for a cookout. Let’s open our hearts and homes!
2. Honor Dad (or Dad Types): Take time to encourage a dad. Maybe your own, or another father figure in your life with a note of appreciation, a meal, or a thoughtful gift
(no socks, ties, pajamas, or shorts please…LOL). (Proverbs 23:24)
3. Serve (or Serve Together): Participate in a local community outreach event or volunteer opportunity as a family or Connect Group. (Galatians 5:13)
4. Connect Group Commitment: Make a firm commitment to regularly attend and actively participate in your Connect Group gatherings this summer. This is where
REAL change happens! (Acts 2:46)
Finally, just a few more words on the power of Connect Groups. These groups are designed for real-life conversations, practical faith-building, and genuine friendships. If you're not yet involved in a Connect Group, now is the perfect time to dive in. Check out the information on our website for dates and times. Remember, we’re stronger together. Let's make this summer count!
Blessings,
PJ
